WALKING: "DE PALINGROUTE" (EEL ROUTE)

The palingroute is a walk around the old peat polder Katwoude and is 14 kilometres long. You will enjoy the view over the IJsselmeer.

It is a luxury to be able to walk the dike of Katwoude. The palingroute which thanks its name to the fish smokeries in Volendam and Monnickendam which she guides you along and which goes around the old peat and cheese polder Katwoude.

The walk shows a captivating bit water state knowledge. The Hoogedijk is firmly and tough, after Katwoude has wrestled in the course of centuries with water. Dike openings were under discussion of the day and the farmers could frequently not match. The water calamity of 1915 that flooded Waterland and also Katwoude, gave the initial impetus to the construction of the IJsselmeer dam.

The Lagedijk gives a complete different picture. Low indeed, much lower because outside water (de Purmer EE) can’t do any harme. The time that ship of Purmerend to sea conduct is long beyond. In 1401 a dam was build, in 1622 the Purmermeer was impoldered. You still see the history in the unevennesses; the bottom of the Purmer lies several meters lower than the polder Katwoude.
